Trying to clean up and organise some space in the cargo hole. Getting ready for the sail and for some sheet metal work. There will be allot of cutting and bending to change all the air intake for the air condition. the old sheet metal is rusted away.

There is a satellite dish inside and a small air condition unit to cool it down.The dish is for the telephone and Internet.

Jeff matcher the compressor and find out that it was dead =(

So we went shopping in the local marked. After 4 our and five different stores we find one we can use. In every shops they say they can find it, and send someone to run of and come back with a compressor ore they call somebody on there mobile phone ho come with a compressor. They are very helpful.

Now we have to take out the old compressor and put in the new one. The new one is slightly different so hopefully it will cool it down enough. Good for us that it's rainy season her and not so hot.

They are made of aluminium and have magnets to hold them in place. It's so much dirt and plastic bags in the water here so we yous the baskets to cower the water in takes for the cooling water for the generators.

In the year 2004 I got a waffle maker for Christmas. I brought it to the Anastasis in 2005 we used it for the Scandinavian nights. But when I left to go to India with the Anastasis, I left the waffle maker with Johan Petur from Faroe Islands. He had it on the Africa Mercy until he left the ship in 2008. Then he give it to Lena & Lars Kristensen (Sweden/Denmark). They capt it til they was leaving and gave it to the Tvedt family. They left this year so now I got it back =)

The last weeks I have been working most of the time with Jeff and the work have been air condition

.Trying to find out how this is working. Why have some disconnect all together.

I also made some cooling fort one of the new generators. The Job turned out easy. There was a went pipe in the siling ho was not in use. I attached a tube to that one and led the air to the generator.

Banana Island

Last weekend we went to Banana Island . That's a island south of Freetown. The rain was poring down the hole time we was there , except of two ours on Sunday. It still was good to go there and be away from the ship for some time.

The Island is so beautiful with rain forest and nice beaches . We was 15 people from the ship ( 7 Norwegians ) sleeping in cabins by the beach.

The only downer was the trip back to the ship in the car. I was driving and the muffler for the exhaust exploded. We had to stop and weld it at alocal shop =( it took us fore hours to get home insted of one and a half hours and we missed dinner.

It have been some time sins I have been righting any thing here . The last months have been too much working so I have not felt like righting .
Right now I'm on holiday back home in Norway . I'm loving it. I'm sitting on my favorite cafe drinking coffee. The sun is shining and the air is"cold " and fresh . It's not rally cold ( 20 degrees ). But for me ho is used to 35 then it feels like cold. Last time I was home was for Christmas 2009 so it's really god to meet family and friends . The next thing to do is to get my motorbike ready so I can go for a ride =)

So what should I say. We have been back in Freetown/Sierra Leone for some time now. The first patients have been true the hospital all ready. We have had two main screenings for patients. The first one did not go very well. We had to many people in the morning , we had no control over the lines of people. And a group of young guys ended up braking them self in true the gate. some people was arrested and some was send to the hospital . People got mashed up against the fends. so we had to stopp the hole screening that day. ( there was maybe 2000 there already 04:00 in the morning)

Last Saturday we had he second screening . Everything went very well. So now we have lots of patients on the word done on deck 3

Starting the generator for the first time . This is the first one of fore , so it's still allot to do.

I'm so looking foreword t o have power again and air condition. The last five months have ben really hot . And sins we did not have Air condition we left the doers open to get some ear inside , then we got lots of mosquito's inside. I think I have been stung fore times every night. I waking up at three a clock in the morning of a mosquito busy to sting me. Manny nights you wake up and take a shower just to cool down and get back to sleep . So hopefully the testing og the generators goes well and we can continue on this mission .

Next month we are sailing to Sierra Leone to help the people there with there medical needs.We will be there for ten months .

A little update

I'm still in Durban ,South Africa. The reason we are here is to upgrade our ship. So the last three months we have done a lot here. The shipyard are taking out six generators end replacing them with fore new MAN generators. The generators is inn ,so now its just the piping and all the cables =)

Me and Jeff are working in the galley. First we clean out all the drains ho was filed with grease. We also made some new drain. Now we are going to fit inn some new sinks. We have done the plumbing part just waiting for the sinks to come.

We also made a new deck were they have the garbage containers in the galley. Now the water drains away and they can hose down the place to clean it. Also when they get pales of food in there they can take it away with a pallet jack.

The most of the crew left the ship wild we are in shipyard . They are living at Appelsbosch 90 minutes drive from the ship.

In shipyard the workers are working 24-7 so every night I get to sleep to a hammer banging on the deck below wail a grinder going all the time. Sins they are taking out the generators we don't have to much power. So no air condition :)

Here they starting to take away the harbor generators .

On Tuesday the 21 we are going to dry dock . There they will cut a hole in the side of the ship and take out whats left of the generators. There is six generators going out and fore new one going in. It sons very easy ....right , but there is all kinds of tanks,pipes and wires in the way.

Finely we did the job. There is been four pies for the cold water for air condition .They have been sweeting allot of water , so there have always been water on the deck in the staircase. The problem was that the pipes was inside the wall . So it was hard to get to an isolate. But now the job is don and now more water on the deck =)

Cleaning heater coil.....

The last weeks we have been cleaning heater coil's for the a/c . We are not using them anymore , but they are still in the system and full of dirt. We open up one and find out that the air did not go true . So after cleaning them with a power washer we nearly got to much air flow. So far we have clean 8 , and there is plenty to go.

Fuel line.

Today me and Jeff have been working on a fuel line pipe. We started the Job three weeks ago but we always got interrupted of other jobs . So now we can finely go back to that pipe.

Now its just to connect the two pieces with a long pipe going threw two bulk heads. That mens a lot of cutting also.

This pipe goes down to a fuel tank and its for metering the fuel level. The pipe ho was there before had a gap between a connecting pipe so the sounding rod got stuck. They had to cut it to get it out.

This is for a different system . A new pipe was welded in to an old line.The old line is now longer in yous.
Jeff cut the old pipe and welded on a cap so that we can clean out the pipe if we need to.

The pipe to the right is the one he cut out . Its solid with dirt ( from old toalets =)

Orphanage.

Today I have been at an orphanage . We left the ship at 09:00 and drove to the place ho is ca 30 min away from the ship.I realy like to go there to get to know the kids . It's so much fun to play with them. They are so thankful that we are coming. I got to try some local food (black beens with casavaroot)....interesting...

Swimming pool

the last two weeks we have been working on the new swimming pool. We were putting up drain pipes for the deck around the pool and also inside the pool. We also made a gate on the top of the steers so nobody will fell down.

Two times we have been in town to by parts that we need. All the stores that we need are in the same street. So wen we park the car there there is five guys running up to us and want to help us find the right parts . They ask what we need and then run of to find it. When they come back we decierd if we can yous it ar if it is the right quality. It's quite funny =)

Last Tuesday all the crew was invited to the president for a dinner. So everyone ho could go was there. They arrange with buses to pick us up and drive us to his palace.

Eight of the crew got the medal of honor for the work we are doing here in Benin.

They served some traditional food with red wine . During the diner they had dancers showing the local dances from all over Benin. It was a grate night.

Fire demper

Thia is a fire damper. In case of a fire we can close them so the air don't go in to the fire. We have four of this type dampers.

My job was to take them apart and make cure that they was working properly. One of them was stuck so I just a day just to get it open. I had to yous a tap and make the treads again. So now its working fine. Now it's up to the deck department to chip the rust and paint them. They "forgot" to paint them in the shipyard wen they was new....

I got to try a Fan Milk bike.

Two weeks ago I was in Togo . There was 17 of us , hike the highest mountain in Togo. The mountain is not very hi , only 962 meter above see level . But it was relay good to walk in the rain forest and true some small villages meting up with the local people.

The next day we were hiking in to a waterfall also true the jungle and villages.

But first some breakfast.

The last day we went for a bike ride with some locals on there bikes. It's a taxi but it's so chip . I asked if I cold drive and it was alright with him. So I was driving wail he was sitting on the back.

Then we went back to the ship again. It take us 7 ours in a small van. The border always take some time. We also had to push start the van every time we stop it. It was a grate trip . I loved every second of it.

The last weeks I have been working up in the Funnel , welding the deck. They were going to paint up there and found all this rust hole's .

It looked really good wen it was finish painted and all welded up.

There is some weak spot's so at that deck. So at some point they have to change some of the plates on the deck up there.

We rented a cabin on the bitch from Saturday to Sunday at Casa del Papa . It's 1 1/2 our driving from Cotonou were the ship is.

It was a really good and relaxing time. With good food ,sun and whatever we needed. And it's really beautiful there.

Last Sunday we were going to visit a church up in a village . The church was 100 km away from the ship so we started at 07:30 am. Nine people in a land rover for more then to hour. On the way up there my boss ho were driving asked the guy ho invited us" ho is going to speaking today ? " . He answered " you are ". So then he had to prepare a spike wail he was driving.

Wen we come to the church everybody was waiting for us. They placed us all the way in the front facing everybody . Then we had to rise up en tell over name and were we come from and what we do on the ship. After the spike there was African offering were everybody dancing up with there money. We were going outside wail they were still singing cas we were going to another church. ( we didn't know that . After 30 minutes driving we were in the next church. They were waiting us. They also placed us in the front facing the church. And we had to stand up again an tell our story. After some singing/dancing we went outside to take pictures with the church members .

Then we were going for lunch , we thoght . But first we had to wisit a nother church . They also was waiting for us. And again the same story , sit in the front ,telle the story and pictures.
Then lunch. ( Chicken and rice).

After lunch we were in a meeting with some of the local pastors . They were talking about what they were they were going with the church from there. They wanted to here our opinion on what they were doing and there vision.

Then we were going to a outdoor church service wit all the churches in the era . In the front again and the same story. We left in the beginning of the meting to go home to the ship. The time was already 18:00 pm.

20:30 we were back from church.

Long day ................but wery good . Her it is Africa time and you dont know wath you are up to before you have done it.

The last two weeks I have mostly been standing here......... filling gas bottle of Oxygen for a cutting though. They are renewing the pilot enter ens .So then they ave to cut and some bodey have to fill the bottles .

The bottles are standing on deck 8 so this is my view. You can see that it's rainy see sen. It' not raining every day .

Now I'm working on some drain pipe going from deck 8 and down to deck 7 and out of the ship. There was some pipe there before , but it did not spit the water far inof out from the ship side. So the water keep draining on the ship and mace it dirty and rusty .

We finiched the job in the cargo hold today. A slide and railing. The slide is for sending boxes down and the railing so nobody wil fall down. They have all the medical supplies in the cargo hold

Ewery day there is a line of people ho ask for medical help here at the ship. But right now we cant see more patient. From now on they have to come back in June at the hospitality center.

Today I have ben of work. I'm normaly of during the weekends, but yesterday I was on duty ( duty plumber ) and had to stay ombord. So today I was sleeping in, then I went for a walk in the city ho ended up by a pool at a hotel in town. After some swiming , sliping in the sun and eating chiken and rice I walked back to the ship.

Hospitality center

On saturday I was helping to put up some tent inside a werhouse. They are going to put in some aie con and it wil be ouer patient hotel . So the patient's will stay there for a day ore two before they come to the ship.

In the afternoon we went to a hotel to go swimming and relex by the pool.

I was a guard her at the screening for two days. It was realy hot standing in the sun al day. But it was real good to be there, To see all the pation's we can help. more then 4000 people was in the line .

After some problems with one of the engens yesterday , we had to stay on ancher until today. They fixed the problem so no we are docked.

Can't wayt to go of the ship and see wath's there.
The biggest problem for me it's the language, French. I hope to lern some wen I'm her. So maybe after the ten month's we are her ........... I can aredy count to two =)

It's two week's left here in the winter, before I go back to Mercy Ships. The 27.01-09 Its the big day. I'm not ready yet , but in two week's I wil be . God's willing.

We just got back from D.R.

One of our project in D.R. was to build rabbit hutches. So they can rise rabbit’s and maybe they can get some food out of it . Ore they can sel rabbits and get some money.

They built the hutch and we provide the rabbit. they got one female and one mail rabbit.
